Happy New Year – Your Business Resolutions for 2012

There’s something about the month of January that puts people in the mood to set goals for their personal lives. Perhaps it’s the barrage of TV commercials for weight loss solutions, the line-ups at the gym or even how comfortable we are wishing complete strangers a Happy New Year.

The promise of a fresh start can be a powerful motivator for small businesses as well. Here are a few Business Resolutions to help you get started to having a great 2012.

1. Know your numbers –It’s vital to ‘know your numbers’ before you can move confidently into the future. A good accounting system will enable you to determine; how many new customers did you acquire, which revenue and expense lines had significant variations over last year or the top 10 products/jobs with the best profit margins. If you find this key financial information difficult to obtain perhaps it’s time for a change.

2. Streamline your processes-Now that you know where you were successful it’s time to look for ways to improve your processes. Make it part of everyone’s job to constantly be on the lookout for the best, most productive approach to every aspect of their daily tasks. Be sure to make it easy for employees, customers and suppliers to connect with your business via your website, comments to a company Blog or reply to your Twitter feed. Evaluate each nugget of feedback on its merits and then action the best ones.

3. Social network in the real world-Whether it’s a friend recommending a restaurant or your dentist recommending a mechanic, successful businesses are driven by referrals and connections. For 2012, put some money and effort into networking the old fashioned way, face-to-face. Later this month we’ll be connecting with customers and prospects at Macworld Expo in San Francisco. We put this valuable experience on our calendar every year – what industry conferences or local meetup groups could you be attending?

4. Celebrate your successes-Many business owners and managers are so focused on the daily operations or the next milestone that they forget to acknowledge success along the way. For 2012, keep your team engaged and the momentum going by taking time to pause and celebrate accomplishments throughout the year, not just at the annual Holiday Party in December.

From the team at Accountek we wish you and your business a prosperous New Year.
